The Republic of Zambia, located in Southern Africa, is a landlocked country bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. The country's capital, Lusaka, is found in the south. It also contains a significant percentage of the population. Originally a British protectorate, Zambia gained independence in 1964. This led to a system of one party rule, up until the start of multi-party elections in 1991.
Although landlocked, the country contains a number of major rivers that flow through the country. In terms of size, Zambia is slightly larger than the state of Texas. It is actually one of Africa's most highly urbanized countries, with half of the population concentrated in urban zones. However, there is a large issue with unemployment and a low GDP. It is one of the world's poorest nations, with many costs stemming from its large HIV epidemic. Agriculture and minerals are the most common industries in Zambia.
