The Republic of Mozambique is a country in the southeastern part of Africa. The former capital city of Lourenco Marques was renamed Maputo. Maputo is located in the southern part of the country.
Mozambique was explored by Vasco de Gama in 1498 and colonized by Portugal in 1505. The country gained its independence in 1975 and shortly after because The People's Republic of Mozambique. Shortly after gaining its independence however, the country became embroiled in an intense Civil War lasting 15 years from 1977 to 1992.
The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese with half the population speaking it as a second language. Other popular languages spoken in Mozambique are Sena, Makhuwa and Swahili. Mozambique is a country blessed with extensive natural resources and the economy is based largely on agriculture. But the country's industry is growing fast with food and beverage, aluminum and petroleum production leading the way.
