Malaysia is a combination of countries in 1963 that consisted of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Two years later Singapore was expelled from the federation. Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy that consists of thirteen states and three federal territories. Malaysia is separated by the South China Sea and is split equally into two parts. Malaysia's capital is in Kuala Lumpur but the government is actually in another city called Putrajaya.
Malaysia's government is similar to the Westminster parliamentary system and the legal system is based on English Common Law. Their constitution states Islam is the official religion but it still states there is freedom of religion. Malaysia has a king and is the head of state known also as the Yang di-PertuanAgong. The king is elected every five years from the hereditary ruling families of the nine Malay states. Malaysia is also a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
