Sports betting and gaming framed the .ladbrokes application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Regulated gambling operators face a compliance problem that sharpens the namespace case considerably: they must demonstrate that customers are transacting on licensed sites in permitted jurisdictions, while unlicensed operators routinely present themselves through domains imitating established bookmaker brands.

A closed extension gives regulators and customers a verifiable marker of a licensed operation. Betting accounts also hold deposited funds, making credential theft directly monetisable. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
