Located in Central America, Honduras is bordered by Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. The country has a rich history of indigenous cultures, with the most well-known being the Maya. The culture is heavily influenced by Spain, which was associated with Honduras before its independence. The country holds a population of a little under eight million currently, with a size that is slightly larger than the US state of Tennessee.
The economy includes fruit, clothing, and minerals, although the country is one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. It receives economic assistance from wealthier countries. The country does contain vast banana plantations, as well as an abundance of mineral deposits. However, a lack of proper transportation systems has made the use of these deposits much more difficult. Although it is located in South America, the United States is still the biggest trading partner with Honduras.
The government includes a president elected for a four-year term, as well as a National Congress that is also elected to four-year terms.
