Originally known as Hellas, and officially known as the Hellenic Republic, Greece is a country located in Southern Europe. Famous for its historical roots as the ancient civilization of Greece, modern Greece is a developed country with high incomes and high standards of living. It is a longtime member of the European Union, NATO, and Eurozone, and is more recently a member of the European Space Agency. It is also a founding member of the United Nations. Of the Balkans, Greece has the largest economy. The current Greece as it is known today was established in 1830.
With a rich history and heritage, Greece is known as the birthplace of many western principles and ideals that we know to this day. This includes: democracy, philosophy, literature, historiography, political science, science, math, and tragic and comedic acting. Also famously, it is the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
Greece is an extremely mountainous country, with eighty percent of it covered by them. There are also 227 inhabited islands out of nearly 1400. Famous landmarks include Mount Olympus and various ancient structures.
