Ghana is a small West African country located on the Gold Coast. Before colonial times, it was occupied by numerous Akan Kingdoms. Due to the wealth of gold in the region, the area largely flourished. Western contact with Ghana was first made with the Portuguese in the 15th Century. Ghana was colonized by the British in 1874.Ghana was the first sub-Saharan country to obtain independence from European Colonialism in 1957.
A large member of the African Union, in addition to its gold, it is also one of the world's largest cocoa producers and home to the world's largest artificial lake. Located just north of the equator, this gives the place an extremely warm climate. It is bordered by Togo, the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and the Atlantic Ocean. Geographically speaking, Ghana is the country closest to what is considered the center of the world based off the prime meridian and equator.
