The Falkland Islands are located in the southern Atlantic Ocean. This island chain is made up of 780 islands. East Falkland and West Falkland are the two main islands. The total land area of the Falkland Islands is roughly 4,700 square miles. The capital of the islands is Stanley. The islands are a British Overseas Territory. A Governor and Chief Executive serve as the head of the government. There is also a Legislative Assembly in place. Politicians have no political party ties.
The economy revolves mainly around the natural resources of the islands. Fishing accounts for 50-60 percent of the annual GDP. Agriculture and tourism are also major sources of revenue. The demographics of the population are mainly composed of Scottish and Welsh immigrants that arrived in 1833. Recent census results reveal that only one third of the inhabitants are native to the island. The majority of people are age 20-60 years old. The population is 53 percent male and 47 percent female. Over two thirds of residents identified as Christians, a third had no preference, and a small percentage had other religious beliefs.
