The Republic of the Union of Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma is a country located in Southeast Asia. Not only is it the 40th largest country in the world at 261,227 sq mi. It is also the 24th most populous country in the world with over 58 million inhabitants. In the 19th century, following several wars, Burma was colonized by Britain.
British rule brought many changes to Burma, including economic, cultural and administrative changes. It gained its independence from British rule in 1948. Since then the country has been in one of the longest running Civil Wars that is still unsolved to this day. Burma was under military rule from 1962 until 2011. The military junta was dissolved after a general election in 2010 installed a civilian government.
Burma is boarded by India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. Almost a third of Burma's total perimeter is uninterrupted coastline along the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
