Located on the north coast of Bornero, and surrounded by the state of Sarawalk, is the country of Brunei. Officially known as both the State of Brunei Darussalam and the Nation of Brunei, the country boasts a population of over 400,000 with the highest South East Asian Human Development Index after Singapore. With history dating back to the 7th century, Brunei became a British protectorate in the late 1800's. During this period, British Residents were introduced to advise the Sultan on various matters. This lasted till around 1960. Brunei regained its independence from the British in 1984.
With its rapid economic growth from the 1970's to 1990's, Brunei has established itself as a classified Developed Country, ranked 4th in the world by IMF for its GDP per capita. Islam is one of the main forms of religion in Brunei, and one of the biggest mosques was built in the 16th century. One interesting feature of the country is that it is separated in two parts, with land from the neighboring Limbang providing the divide.
