Benefits of a .BANK domain
When it comes to top-level domains, more requirements to own a domain name means more credibility and more security. To acquire a .bank domain, financial institutions must meet certain eligibility criteria and go through a verification process to ensure they are legitimate, chartered, and regulated entities. This provides customers with the trust necessary to conduct business in the financial sector. With phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks on the rise, .bank offers a much needed level of security - especially for local or regional banks.
Four Levels of .bank
Here are the three ways you can use a .bank domain for your institution.
Portfolio Ownership. The most basic use of .bank is simply owning the domain in order to take it off the market and reserve it for future use. Having control over your domain across multiple extensions is the key to sound portfolio ownership. To learn more about domain portfolios, please see our Portfolio Management Services.
Domain Forwarding. Another use of .bank is as a domain forwarding address. What this means is when someone enters yourname.bank, it will automatically redirect to your primary website. This is a fantastic way to transition into using .bank if you don’t want to make a full switch right away. When you register a .bank domain with 101domain, we can set up domain forwarding on your behalf, so you can get started with .bank right away.
Secondary Website. Many banks choose to keep their primary website on their current domain, and use .bank for a secondary website. A secondary website can be used as a marketing site for a specific campaign, or simply as a separate place to store specific information. For example, you could have your customer portal hosted on .bank while keeping your informational materials on .com.
Primary Website. The most reputable and recommended use of the .bank domain is to make it your primary website address. In order to do this, you must meet the highest levels of security regarding your email, DNS, and web infrastructure. We partner with industry-leading technology partners and provide you with a dedicated team of 101domain engineers to help you satisfy the .bank eligibility requirements.
Eligibility and Security Requirements
According to the .bank registry, only official government regulated banks are eligible to register a .bank domain. This includes retail banks, savings associations, and holding/parent companies of those organizations. This can also include associations primarily composed of these types of entities, as well as government regulators of them.
For security, .bank is among the most secure domains due to these regularly monitored requirements:
- Initial Verification: The fTLD Registry first confirms that the requested domain is in alignment with your organization’s legal name, and that the requesting employee has the authorization to do so.
- Zone Security: Maintaining Name Servers and Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) keeps your site safe by ensuring a reliable online presence for your customers and preventing redirection to malicious sites.
- Encryption: .bank registrants must obtain a digital identity certificate to enable HTTPS, as well as implement TLS 1.2 or higher for encrypted connections. This encryption protocols ensure the security of data transferred between you and your customers on your website.
- Email authentication: Standard email sender authentication protocols such as DMARC and SPF are required to ensure the integrity of your email communications and prevent phishing attacks.
