The United States of America has a population of more than 300 million people, with about 3.8 million square miles of land. The country is divided into 50 states, where forty eight are contiguous, plus Alaska in the north and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The country features the Appalachian mountain range on the eastern seaboard, and the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada range on the western side. The Mississippi-Missouri River is the fourth longest river in the world, and the longest in the USA.

The country was formed on July 4th, 1776, as they declared independence from Britain which originally started the United States as 13 colonies on the Atlantic coast. Further annexations from countries such as Mexico, Spain and France led to the expansion of the country's borders over time.

The United States has the largest economy in the world, with over 13 trillion USD as gross domestic product in 2006. After the Cold War, the U.S. is a leader in economics, politics, and culture, as well as accounting for over 50% of the world's military spending. The United States is also a founding member of NATO, and is considered a very strong military force.
